SANSEVIERIA

Sansevieria (mother-in-law's tongue) is a genus of about 70 species of flowering plants in the family Ruscaceae, native to tropical and subtropical regions of the Old World (The Old World consists of those parts of Earth known to Europeans, Asians, and Africans in the 15th century before the voyages of Christopher Columbus). The genus was named in honor of Raimondo di Sangro (1710-1771), prince of San Severo in Italy. Spellings "Sanseveria" and "Sanseviera" are commonly seen as well, the confusion deriving from alternate spellings of the Italian place name. Sansevieria is known as a million remarkable genus with unique shapes. This genus has many species with their own remarkable features. Some of them are:

Sansevieria trifasciata
It known as "the snake plant". The young leaves grow exactly at the middle of the rosette part that rise to the top. From the beginning, the growth of this plants is look like palm leaf rib. Its main feature is wet-leaves.

  1. Sansevieria trifasciata "Hahnii". The leaf's color is dark green and has grayish-white latitude lines. Its leaf has only 10 cm length. The lower end part are wider than the higher end. The leaves grow in non-upright manner and in a sort order. If you see it at the first time, it looks like pineapple tree or bird's nest. That's why this variant also known as Sansevieria bird's nest.
  2. Sansevieria trifasciata "Golden Hahnii". The physical appearance of this variant is similar to Hahnii's. The Golden Hahnii is distinguished from The Hahnii's by the leaves color combinations. According to the name, The Golden Hahnii has greenish-golden leaves with ribbon shapes at the tip of the leaves.
  3. Sansevieria trifasciata "Silver Hahnii". This variant is longer than any other Hahnii's, but it still shorter than the regular Sansevieria. The most interesting part of this variant is the greenish-silver leaves which have dark green horizontal lines spread around them.

Sansevieria non-trifasciata
Let's say this species as the longest and the biggest leaves than any other Sansevieria. It grows upward strongly and a little bit thicker. If you pay attention to the leaves, you'll find the green-white color combinations. The white color is dominant than the green color. The unique feature of this species is dry-leaves.



Sansevieria cylindrica
According to the name of the species. It has cylindrical-shapes leaves that grows upward. The leaves are very rigid and thick. Its leaves have dark green color with grayish-black path combining with lawn green path.
